Customer
Merck operates the Healthcare division at its Weiterstadt site. 160 employees research, develop, produce and market innovative biopharmaceuticals and small molecule drugs to help patients with diseases with high therapeutic need.
Scope of supply and services
Design, manufacture and supply of three ice storage modules for the air conditioning of an office building.
Purpose of the system
Retrofit of the cooling supply to an existing building. The connected load of the building was not sufficient to supply the chiller at peak times during the day. In order to reduce the power requirement, the energy-intensive cooling generation had to be decoupled from the cooling consumption. The ice store is charged at night and cools the offices during the day. This means that the chiller only rarely needs to be switched on at peak times during the day. This enables optimised operation with reduced consumption and CO2 emissions.
The challenge
Due to the limited space available at the installation site, a compact design of the storage unit was required, while at the same time having a high power requirement.
